Universal Type ServerAdobe Creative Cloud subscribers now have the ability to use some of the Typekit fonts on the desktop. If your organization has upgraded to Adobe Creative Cloud, you can now choose to enable the use of Typekit desktop fonts in the Universal Type Client.

When Typekit desktop fonts are downloaded from Creative Cloud, your users will automatically see a new Typekit font workgroup in the Universal Type Client. This workgroup displays all of the Typekit desktop fonts that the user has downloaded to their machine.

While users don’t have the direct ability to activate & deactivate Typekit desktop fonts, they are able to browse, preview, search and compare fonts in this library, just like they would any other font in their collection.

This is a free update for all Universal Type Server. 4.0 users. To install the update, download and run the latest client installers.

This update also includes support for Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) and Windows 8.1.

  1. For the time being, yes, Typekit desktop fonts can be viewed in the Preview window, tagged with keywords, etc. The availability and activation of Typekit desktop fonts is currently managed from the Typekit website.

  2. Will Typekit fonts be replicated to the workgroup so that others user #2 can use the Typekit font user #1 used?

  3. Typekit fonts are per user and managed through Adobe’s online system. So, user #2 will need to sync the same Typekit fonts that user #1 used. Good news is that Adobe has primitive auto-activation in their apps to help make syncing these fonts easier. If the font isn’t found in your local database by the Extensis plug-in, then the Typekit plug-in checks afterward and will suggest that the user syncs the fonts from Typekit.
