Celebrating 2016 & the beginning of an exciting 2017: Extensis style

2016 Extensis Holiday Party at Cooper's Hall

An Extensis celebration means blackjack and roulette with Monopoly© money, booze, a photo booth, and karaoke. I mean, that’s all you really need to have an exciting holiday party, right? Well, that and remarkable co-workers that help round out the year and start a new one with a bang! That final ingredient was definitely on point at the Extensis Holiday Party.

The party delighted employees with great food and unlimited spirits at Cooper’s Hall, a winery and tap room. Cooper’s Hall is one of a kind with a charming, festive ambiance and wine on tap for patrons to enjoy. Yep, wine on tap.

Besides unlimited beverages, employees relished fine apps, and entertainment.

…however, a few ended the night in a big way. While many had a blast playing blackjack and roulette with faux dollars, a few actually won big! Congrats to our first place casino winner, Brooks Brown, Sr. Software Engineer and our second place winner, Don Johnson, Technical Writer. Both turned the most “fake money” by the end of the night.

There were also many raffles prizes and winners, but Kris Hurrle, Support Technician, took home the biggest prize of the night: an Ipad Mini!

What does it take to reign supreme?

Garlic, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, hot sauce, garlic, chili powder, kidney beans, garlic, pepper, cumin, garlic. Ok, ok. We know garlic is generally a key ingredient, but we also know that nine of Extensis’ “iron chefs” used more than that when they brought their best chili recipes to the ultimate taste test for the 2016 Extensis Chili Cook-Off.

So, what does it take to win?

A unique blend? A perfect union of savory and spice? More beans, less meat? More meat, less beans? Add corn? Plus potato? All of the above? Out of our nine contestants, all Extensis employees, every single chili seemed to have a different take on what makes a winning chili, but all nine varieties were delicious.

And the winner is…hold on. Not so fast. Before the winner is announced, you need to know what makes a winning chili here at Extensis.

Crockpots at Extensis

It starts with a good nose/aroma

Before 9 am, all nine crockpots were plugged in. By 9:30 am, the whole lobby was filled with the smell of chili goodness. By 10 am, we were already hungry.

Make it interesting

They say variety is the spice of life. From Pork and Greens, to Spicy Turkey and from Elk to pineapple vegetarian (getting name), we weren’t short of creativity which made choosing a top chef even harder.

Preparation is key

As the crockpots warmed, chefs added more spice, stirred their chili, and tasted their masterpieces.

Extensis Chili Cook-Off

Make it the tastiest

At noon, the Extensis Chili Cook-Off began. The lounge was filled with people and bowls began filling with chili…taste by taste.

Whose chili reigns supreme

By 1 pm, employees voted for their favorite chili. Chicken Enchilada? Well, Pork Chili Verde had a nice twist. Spicy Turkey was unique and delicious while the pineapple vegetarian was awesome, but we had to pick one. The winner is…

Elk Chili!

Jim Kidwell, Sr. Product Marketing Manager, made his famous Elk Chili. It had a smoky flavor that won taste testers over. Congrats Chef Kidwell! Jim won an apron and an Amazon gift card.

Coming in a close 2nd and 3rd were Spicy Turkey and Meat Lovers Medley. Extensis would like to thank all chefs for providing their fellow teammates with a delicious lunch. We can’t wait until next year.

It wasn’t just any typical sunny Friday at Extensis.

The end of the week always elicits some excitement around here, but something seemed different. There was a sense of anticipation in the air. Maybe it was the new Belizean restaurant located steps away along the Portland State University park blocks that everyone has been raving about? Or, perhaps it was the fresh batch of donuts and bagels that arrive every Friday. Maybe the competitive game of darts happening in the common area?

All of a sudden at two in the afternoon, everyone was gone. Vanished!

Where is everyone? The Extensis crew couldn’t take it any longer. Looking out their windows down onto Naito Parkway they could see swarms of people flocking to Tom McCall park. So, they took an early reprieve to escape to 29th annual Oregon Brewers Festival – the largest craft brew festival in North America!

IMG_6176

It’s no secret. We like to have a good time.

Especially during summer months when the city of Portland comes to life. Again just a suggestion…And this year was no different…Brew Fest is a staple of Extensis culture. It wouldn’t be the last week of July if we weren’t handing out mugs and tokens and taking off early to make sure we are able to taste unique brews such as pFriem’s Mango Sour and New Holland – Dragons Milk Reserver’s Mexican Spice Cake (it really does taste like cake!). From sours to IPAs, team Extensis along with almost 80,000 other patrons and 2,000 volunteers were able to taste and enjoy over 80 craft brews at the festival.

Extensis at Oregon Brewers Festival

With a healthy heaping of enjoyable food to choose from, a superb local music line-up, and refreshing misters to help relieve the pain of standing in long lines during 90 degree heat, this five day extravaganza is well worth it.

The next brew festival will take place July 26th – 30th, 2017 and we will definitely be there!

How does Extensis maintain high employee tenure in such a hot industry?

We’ve got something we’re really proud of. Over 37% of employees have been working at Extensis for over ten years! From Accounting to Engineering to Customer Support, people really like it here. This is impressive considering that, on average, employees stick around for 3 years at tech companies according to the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM).

“I love representing this organization.”

Carli Edvalson, Senior Human Resources Generalist and an 11 year Extensis veteran explains why people love working at Extensis, “Many organizations talk about work-life balance, and the importance of recognizing the value of life outside of work, but not many encourage and foster that balance like Extensis does.”

Extensis believes it is important to provide employees with the balance needed to stay engaged and avoid getting burnt out.

The company also promotes learning opportunities, cross-departmental communication and keeps up on industry and employee trends in order to preserve team happiness and engagement.

15 years and counting…

“Extensis has been a continuously evolving organization that challenges me to stretch and at the same time supports a healthy work/life balance,” says Marisela Alzuhn. Marisela is a Marketing Manager and has been with the company for over 15 years. “I’ve also been fortunate throughout my time at Extensis to work with some amazing people who have high standards and do their best work.”

20 years and counting!

Greg LaViolette, aka the “Voice of Extensis” (he is the important voice you hear when calling Extensis), has been part of the team for 20 years! “Recognition, fun, food, and good people,” is why Extensis’s Lead Network Systems Administrator has been part of the crew for so long. “Plus, I’m the voice people hear when they call us…I can’t leave!”

Tenure and company culture have a lot in common

“From an HR perspective, tenure is one of the most significant metrics I track, report on, and read about,” says Carli. “It’s reflective of the culture and it serves as an indicator of the level of contentment of employees at any organization.”

“I know our tenure is impressive, and it makes my job easier when I am recruiting talent to join our team. The most common question I’m asked by a perspective candidate in an interview is, ‘Why do you like working here?’ and I can answer it confidently and without hesitation,” says Carli.

Extensis Bike Challenge

Right now, all over Portland, people are riding their bikes. Of course, some of those people are Extensis employees commuting to and from the office, biking around the waterfront on their lunch breaks or tearing through a nearby gravel trail on a Saturday morning. There could be a light drizzle or a torrential downpour with thunder and lightning, yet there would still be a significant amount of Portlanders peddling their way through downtown. “The big one” could occur, yet many would not put their kick stands down and run for cover (OK, maybe an earthquake would cause a few to pump their breaks …maybe).

What are we doing about all this cycling? In cooperation with the Extensis Fit Challenge, we’ve organized an Extensis May Bike Challenge!

Bikes and more bikes

Our bike challenge is led by Mark Murphy, Director of Information Systems at Extensis, who is an avid bike rider and the 2015 company bike challenge winner. Mark has been a cyclist for over 19 years. One aspect he loves about Extensis is it’s bike friendly culture and easy access to Portland’s waterfront park. Mark and many others enjoy the nearby biking trails, specifically the Spring Water Corridor – a 40 mile bicycle highway.

Extensis is competing with over 800 businesses across Oregon via lovetoride.net. This site gives businesses an opportunity to not only compete, but track their mileage and see how much their efforts are reducing CO2 emissions.

Prizes are awarded! Points are earned by tracking miles and encouraging people to ride. Winners who log their trips and “encouragements” are entered into a drawing each week in May. Prizes include everything from gift certificates to PDX hot spots like Tasty n Alder and Mississippi Studios to a wine tasting for eight at Willamette Valley Vineyards.

Extensis bike challengeSo far, team Extensis has made a total of 179 trips which has saved over 402 kg of CO2 since May 1st.

Whether you enjoy a leisurely bike stroll with granny gear or you are saddling up for the Tour de France, Extensis makes pushing pedals a bit easier by providing bike storage, showers, lockers, also a cash incentive for biking, walking or carpooling to work instead of driving.

The challenge ends at the end of this month. Who will be the winner this year? Will the reigning champ, Mark Murphy, reign supreme once more? We’ll find out next week!

Extensis Gets Fit

There’s nothing better than helping people live happier, healthier lives.

In April, Extensis employees biked, walked, ran, swam, danced, hiked, and wheel posed (ouch!) their way to maintaining health and wellness by participating in Extensis’s annual Fit Challenge. So far, employees have participated in 102,943 minutes of activity. That’s 1,715 hours of fitness! Employees split up into nine teams and tracked their workout routines by using a clever app called Lucky Steps developed by Extensis’s very own font developer, Ryan Tinker. Lucky Steps works by syncing up to a Fit Bit or allowing participants to enter their activity manually and rewarding them for their efforts. Employers can choose how they want to incentivize their teams via Lucky Steps.

Extensis Team Culture

Font Developer, Ryan Tinker, hiking in PDX.

There’s nothing more rewarding than a reward.

Besides the obvious benefits of getting fit, Extensis gave raffle tickets to participants for every 30 minutes of activity. The more you work out, the more chances you have to win. The raffle winner (a winner was chosen for April and another winner will be chosen for May) wins 125 dollars. Bernardine Lim, Accountant, was the lucky drawing winner this month. She tracked nearly 1,007 minutes of activity- exceeding her goal of 275 minutes.

Healthy Workplace = Happy Employees

Extensis in Portland, Oregon

Extensis gets fit in Hood River, Oregon.

It’s not easy maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially in Portland, Oregon. We live in beer capital USA where happy hour is plentiful and the food is actually really, really good. However, nothing compares to being active in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. We’ll enjoy our beer, wine and happy hour and stay active while doing it.

In an upward movement to build a culture based on health and wellness, Extensis will continue to encourage employees to maintain their active lifestyle by offering similar challenges. The Fit Challenge has had a positive response with over 50% employee participation. Go team!

Sons and daughters of Extensis let their creative juices flow with Fontspiration in honor of National Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. With the school year ending, we knew it would be a hard time to bring kids to us, so we brought our work to them! Parents sat down with their kids to engage them in one of our biggest passions: fonts.

Kids ages 9-13 created custom typographic masterpieces using our Fontspiration app. We thought this would allow us to inspire our children. We were pleasantly wrong. They inspired us!

Deciding whether or not you need a digital asset management (DAM) system can be a bit tricky and you may be asking yourself “…what is this DAM thing?” Guess what? You’re not alone. We would like to help you get a grasp on DAM and provide answers to common digital asset management questions:

What in the world is Digital Asset Management?

Maybe you know a little about digital asset management or maybe the concept sounds completely foreign. DAM is a way to organize, categorize, find, retrieve and store digital files, such as images, documents, audio and video clips. These digital files are referred to as assets because a significant amount of time and expense goes into creating these files – making them very important resources. To help locate files easily, digital asset management software typically uses a metadata and keyword-tagging system so you can find what you need fast.

Here’s a quick video delving further into DAM, with some highlights on our solution- Extensis Portfolio:

Portfolio-Video-Thumb Final

Why do I need Digital Asset Management Software?

More files mean more disorganization, which leads to lost time and money spent trying to find them (check out the DAM Infographic on just how much you might be losing). Imagine having the ability to let people inside and outside your organization find, organize, and convert media files quickly. DAM software does just that. By helping businesses locate, reuse and share assets, workflow improves, time is saved and profits increase. Digital asset management also provides the ability to properly track usage rights on assets, avoiding fees and offering the ability to easily sell and license assets.

What Industries Use Digital Asset Management Systems?

With the explosion of digital assets and media over the past decade, organizations spanning across many industries struggle with how to keep files organized, accessible, and properly managed. From higher education to retail organizations, museums to government, digital asset management is needed and used by many different types of organizations.

DAM Toolkit

We’d like to answer more of your questions and point you in the right direction by introducing you to our DAM Toolkit. The toolkit is chocked full of valuable resources aimed at helping you make an informed decision when selecting the best DAM solution for your organization. The toolkit includes: workflow assessment worksheets, guidelines on building selection criteria, an ROI calculator, a best practices guide, and much more. Before making a DAM decision, check out the kit and see if a digital asset management system is right for you!

“Where is that one picture we created for that one campaign that one time?”

Ring any bells? Personally, I understand this challenge. I recall being in an impromptu brainstorming meeting for a campaign that needed to be launched in a week. I tried to find a digital ad that was utilized for a like campaign six months prior. It’s simple, right? All we needed to do was change the ad copy, call-to-action, and boom! We have a “new” advertisement.

DAM-creative-agencies-epic-search-300x200

Well, not so simple. Five of us were searching and searching and still couldn’t find the native file. Design had to go back to the drawing board and create the ad from scratch. Not to mention, there were other assets we couldn’t find that needed to be utilized for the new campaign.

Now, marketing teams (agency or in house), work on a spectrum of projects from social media to search engine optimization and more specifically, creating content for the web, advertising, PR, email campaigns, and more. The list goes on. Keeping up with all of it can be a bit daunting, but we do so by working with the tools that we have.

Let’s revisit that last minute brainstorming meeting I was in. Let’s say our team utilized a digital asset management (DAM) system. Using a combination of metadata and keywords, I would search for the file and it would appear immediately, along with any other vital information such as use guidelines associated with that document. We could have easily downloaded the file, handed it to design along with updated copy, and Voila!

Here’s a little more about how digital asset management could have helped me and can potentially help you:

– Self-Service Distribution to Sales:
We know that Sales and Support regularly asks for collateral that is usually locked down in Marketing folders. It would save time if Sales and other departments could get what they need instantly without having to ask someone to track it down. With DAM, a self-service feature can be implemented so documents, project files, collateral, images, etc. can simply be downloaded and utilized instantly. Marketing saves time. Sales gets what they need, when they need it.

– Prevent Assets From Being Used Inappropriately:
Marketing teams can gain control over who has access to what and when. This decreases the risk of violating branding guidelines and liability. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a logo sneak through the cracks and used incorrectly. With a digital asset management solution, marketing teams have the capability to place assets that can be trusted in the hands of people who can be trusted. Features exist that help control who can see assets and who can download them.

– Expire Assets When No Longer Approved for Use:
It’s a best practice to avoid deleting items that are no longer needed, but finding a place to archive these assets and finding them if needed can be tedious. Instead, DAM creates an easy way to archive these assets so they are not in visible. This can prevent misuse and reduce the risk of liability.

We have so many moving parts associated with so many projects and campaigns. Most need to be implemented and completed quickly while meeting high expectations. DAM is a tool that can help improve workflow and decrease organizational chaos so you can concentrate on meeting expectations, instead of trying to find an asset or worrying about someone else using an asset inappropriately. It’s one less thing we as busy marketers have to worry about. Happy Marketing!
