A keyword list is a series of words or phrases used in a digital asset management (DAM) system to organize metadata tags and simplify file searches. Extensis has created a keyword list of terms inspired from our experience with graphic design and marketing communications workflows. The list could also be used for PR, advertising, print and publishing, retail, and media workflows.

A master keyword list includes a predefined list and taxonomy of search terms. This provides users with the convenience and consistency of choosing from an existing list of tags when applying keywords or other metadata to images, photos of people or products, videos, marketing collateral, and sales literature. With keyword lists users can quickly choose from a menu of available keywords instead of manually typing in search terms.

Our sample keyword list for creative workflows can be used as is, or as a starting point. The list can be edited using any text editor or within many DAM systems after import. We recommend reviewing the list with stakeholders, especially those who will be searching or tagging assets. Remove any terms that do not apply, add any relevant terms that were not included, and rename terms as needed to fit your organizational vocabulary. For example, “Customer Story” could be called “Customer Profile” in your organization.

Download the sample master keyword list here.

At the beginning of September, Thomas Phinney, Extensis Product Manager for Fonts and Typography will be speaking at the ATypI conference in Dublin, Ireland. The Association Typographique Internationale (ATypI) is the global forum and focal point for the type community and business, and this is the annual ATypI conference.

Thomas will be speaking about the business of web fonts, how we came to develop our web font rental service, WebINK, and the issues that type foundries need to consider when publishing their fonts for use on the web. Here’s a bit about his presentation.

Type foundries considering the world of web fonts face a dizzying array of questions. The most challenging are not technical issues, but business questions. It’s not just “how big is this market and how fast is it growing?” but other complex issues of the business model: what is the ideal level of font protection? What’s appropriate pricing? Rental or one-time fee? Is it bad business for the type industry to serve raw desktop fonts as web fonts? Extensis’ Thomas Phinney tackles these questions with plenty of audience participation and discussion.

For more information about the conference, and to register, see the ATypI site.

In the fast paced world of design, keeping your design tools current and compatible is important. That’s why our powerful single-user font manager Suitcase Fusion 3 is now fully compatible with the most current design applications in Adobe CS5.

Whether you spend all of your time laying out projects in InDesign, or creating custom drawings in Illustrator, Suitcase Fusion 3 will automatically activate fonts for your documents using a new set of plug-ins for CS5 applications.

Using Font Sense technology, the plug-ins accurately identify the exact font required for a document. This can be critical in workflows where accurate character spacing is very important to prevent text container overflow, and costly document reprints.

To take Suitcase Fusion 3 and the new plug-ins for a spin, download a free trial of Suitcase Fusion from the Extensis website.

Making Faces is a film about the creation of metal type in the 21st century will be screened at the upcoming Typecon event in Los Angeles. It features the metal typography work of the late Jim Rimmer and is for all who love their typography on the heavy side, the heavy metal side that is! (OK, bad joke, I take it back.)

To follow what’s going on with the Making Faces film, see this blog, maintained by the fine folks at P22 Type Foundry.
